ROBERT MITCHELL TO RUN IN GEORGETOWN-POWNAL BY-ELECTION

Charlottetown, PE
November 10, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Robert Mitchell, leader of the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island, announced today that he is running as the Liberal candidate in the Georgetown-Pownal by-election, which has been called for December 08.

Mitchell is well-known to Islanders, having served as MLA from 2007 to 2020 and as a cabinet minister with responsibility for senior portfolios. He brings experience, a proven track record, and confident leadership to the table, and is eager to hear from the residents of District 2 on the issues that matter most to them.

“Islanders have grown tired and frustrated under this Conservative government. Progress has stalled on the things that matter most to Islanders,” said Mitchell.” The only thing Islanders are seeing from this government is misplaced priorities.”

Mitchell’s decision to run in the by-election is supported by the Liberal caucus, the District 2: Georgetown-Pownal district association, and the party. Fresh off the heels of the largest leadership victory in PEI history, Mitchell is ready to deliver for Islanders.

“Robert has proven himself to be that person that can bring us together,” said Kevin Doyle, the President of the District 2: Georgetown-Pownal Liberal Association. “Robert is a kind man, and I know he is driven by making PEI the best it can be. He’s well respected in all corners of the district, and we’d be lucky to have him as our MLA. In addition, if he doesn’t run here on December 8, he could be prevented from entering the house until the next general election which could be in October 2027. All Islanders are best served when our elected leaders are inside the Legislature.”

He has close connections to Georgetown-Pownal, having grown up in eastern PEI, and having spent much time in the district throughout his life. Mitchell’s humble, hard-working, “get-it-done” approach to politics and leadership is well-known, and constituents of District 2 deserve nothing less than a candidate who will stand up and fight for their voice to be heard.

Islanders are growing frustrated with Premier Rob Lantz’s political maneuvering to cling to power and that the PC Party has refused to hold a leadership race, denying Islanders a say in who should govern our province. With today’s announcement, the people of Georgetown-Pownal have a clear choice they can choose Robert Mitchell’s proven track record of respecting democracy, dedicated service, and results.

Mitchell is running in this by-election so he can bring his compassionate and strong leadership style to the Legislature, represent the voices of Eastern PEI and to set the foundation for a better future for all of us.

“I want to be a voice for all Islanders, and the first step is gaining the trust of constituents in Georgetown-Pownal. I look forward to knocking on doors, meeting the community, and having real conversations with Islanders on their future." concluded Mitchell.
