As PEI Liberals meet to elect a new Leader on Saturday, October 4, they will be joined by Physician, Humanitarian and former Premier of Newfoundland & Labrador, Dr. Andrew Furey.

Dr. Furey was the 14th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, serving from 2020 to 2025. A signature accomplishment as Premier, Dr. Furey negotiated a new $227-billion MOU with Québec related to the Churchill Falls hydro-electrical development.

But it is Dr. Furey’s values and accomplishments as a Humanitarian that can best illustrate the importance of Liberal values in the world today. In 2011, in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Furey founded Team Broken Earth, which grew into a global initiative involving a multidisciplinary team of over 1,000 volunteers delivering critical medical aid in disaster zones and conflict areas.  

The next Leader of the PEI Liberal Party is stepping forward at a time where the Province is facing challenges from within - a Health Care crisis and historic Budget deficits - and from without, joining Prime Minister Carney’s efforts to strengthen Canada to face international challenges of trade and security. 

Dr. Furey’s message will highlight the importance of maintaining our values in the face of these challenges.

The Convention begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Delta Prince Edward. Dr. Furey is scheduled to speak at 3:30 p.m.
