Statement from Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell on the Federal Government's Commitment to Strengthen our Energy Systems

I welcome the federal Liberal government’s decision on Friday to prioritize the Prince Edward Island–New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion Project, including the new subsea transmission cables that are critical to our province’s future.

This is an important step toward strengthening energy security, improving reliability, and ensuring Prince Edward Island has the infrastructure needed to support future growth.

For too long, Islanders have seen how vulnerable our electricity system can be. Investing in modern, resilient infrastructure will help protect families and businesses, while creating opportunities for a stronger and more connected regional energy grid.

I’m running in this by-election, and to be Premier, because nation-building projects like this need a cooperative partner at the table with the federal government. Someone focused on getting results for Islanders.

Unfortunately, Premier Lantz has spent too much time focused on internal power struggles and not enough time negotiating and advocating for a stronger energy future. We've seen this Premier prioritize blaming the federal government for their own mismanagement.  That is not federal-provincial diplomacy, and it is not how you get things done.

I thank the federal government for recognizing the importance of this project, and I look forward to working with all partners to move it forward as quickly as possible for the benefit of Islanders.
