Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell statement on Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act
Today, Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell issued the following statement regarding the federal government’s introduction of Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act:
“I want to commend Prime Minister Mark Carney, Island MPs Sean Casey, Heath MacDonald, Bobby Morrissey, and Kent MacDonald, and their Government for introducing Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act.
This legislation represents an important first step toward better protecting Island and Canadian children from the growing risks of online harm. While there is still work to be done to ensure the legislation delivers meaningful safeguards and accountability, today’s announcement marks significant progress in the right direction.
Our Liberal team has consistently called on the provincial government to take stronger action to protect children and create safer environments for young people, both online and in our communities. If implemented effectively, this legislation will provide an important additional layer of protection and support for young Islanders and families across Canada.
As we continue building our platform for the next provincial election, we look forward to putting forward an Island-grown plan that complements this legislation and further strengthens protections for children here on Prince Edward Island.
Keeping our children safe should never be a partisan issue. It is a responsibility we all share, and one that demands leadership at every level of government.”
