Prince Edward Island’s oyster and aquaculture industry is woven into the very fabric of who we are as Islanders.
For generations, growers, fishers, processors, buyers, and sellers have worked tirelessly to build a world-class industry. One where markets across North America and around the globe actively seek out PEI product because of its quality and reputation. But the last few years have been incredibly difficult. From major weather events to the growing prevalence of MSX and Dermo – the ongoing uncertainty keeps families up at night.
This is not just an industry facing challenges, it is an industry under real pressure.
This week, we spent several hours with industry leaders who are working night and day to protect what they’ve built. The message was clear: without urgency and meaningful support from government, we risk losing a vital pillar of our provincial economy.
While it is positive that government has now issued an RFP for a consultant to develop an oyster industry strategy, that process should have been initiated months ago. Waiting another six months for a report reflects a lack of urgency for an essential industry that needs support today and not next season.
An all-party legislative committee tabled a report during the fall sitting recommending immediate support for growers and processors. Yet as of today, no money has flowed to this portion of the industry as promised by the Conservatives.
The Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island is calling on government to immediately identify those growers and processors who have applied and are in dire need, and to expedite approvals so designated funding can reach those most at risk as quickly as possible.
Islanders built this industry through resilience and hard work. They deserve a government that matches that same commitment.
We are listening. We are building a platform. And we are committed to making the future of PEI’s oyster and aquaculture sector a top priority.
Because when this industry succeeds, Prince Edward Island succeeds.
