Federal budget delivers support, now provincial government must deliver results, says Liberal Leader Dan Kutcher
The provincial government has to step up and demonstrate that it can use the significant federal funding it receives to deliver real results for Islanders, says PEI Liberal Party Leader Dan Kutcher.
The affordability measures announced by the federal government’s fall budget include various measures to support Canadians who are struggling with the rising cost of living. This includes a one-time 50% top-up to the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit for 2026-27, and making the Canada Caregiver Tax Credit fully refundable.
Kutcher was also encouraged to see continued stability in federal transfers to Prince Edward Island. The federal government continues to provide PEI with significant financial support, with more than $1 billion in major federal transfers this fiscal year, including $723 million in Equalization, $254 million in the Canada Health Transfer and $79 million in the Canada Social Transfer.
“These dollars are critical to supporting our health care system, education, social programs and other essential public services,” Kutcher said. “That investment is important, but Islanders also have every right to expect the provincial government to use those dollars responsibly and effectively.”
The problem is not a lack of federal funding. The provincial government has access to substantial federal resources, yet Islanders continue to face challenges accessing health care, finding affordable housing, and getting the services and supports they need.
“Islanders deserve a provincial government that can turn those investments into better outcomes, rather than continuing to make excuses for why the results aren’t there,” Kutcher said. “Our focus will continue to be on ensuring that every public dollar is spent responsibly and that Islanders see real improvements in the services they rely on every day.”
