Carolyn Simpson has spent her personal and professional life in the service of others. As an educator, Carolyn spent her early career working with young children and their families. She was an early childhood educator before taking leadership roles as assistant director and then director of an early learning and child care center. Carolyn went on to become a member of the faculty in early childhood education at Holland College before moving to the provincial government.
Carolyn held a variety of roles within government including, Kindergarten Program Administrator, Manager of Kindergarten Programs and Director of Early Childhood Development before being appointed as the Early Years Advisor, a position she held until her retirement in 2023.
Carolyn was instrumental to the success of such initiatives as PEI’s Kindergarten Program, the Universal Preschool Program as well as the signing of the first Canada-Prince Edward Island Early Learning and Child Care Agreement which led to $10 a day child care on PEI.
Carolyn is active within her community and has served as an Elder within her church, has volunteered at community events and has sat on local boards including the Board of Directors of the Early Childhood Development Association of PEI, Queens County Residential Services, Inc., the PEI Association of Licensed Practical Nurses, and the Board of Governors of Hospice and Palliative Care Association of PEI. She is currently a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Prince Edward Island where she serves as Chair of the Campus Culture Oversight Committee and is a member of the Executive Committee and Human Resources Committee. Carolyn is a member of 100 Women Who Care and recently became a volunteer at Health PEI with the Patient and Family Partner Program.
In recognition of her successful career Carolyn was awarded the Holland College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2021, The Early Childhood Development Association of PEI Award of Excellence in 2018, and the PEI Children’s Secretariat Long Standing Service Award,1999-2009.
Carolyn holds a Master of Education in Leadership in Learning from the University of Prince Edward Island, as well as a Diploma in Human Services, Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education and a Certificate in Learning Management from Holland College.
Carolyn lives in East Royalty and is the proud mom of two adult children, mother-in law, and ‘Mammie’ to six grandchildren.
