Over the weekend, Bonnie and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Ann MacKinley, beloved wife of former long-time Liberal MLA, Cabinet Minister, and former Interim Leader Ron MacKinley.
Many political observers point to Ron’s long and successful career as a model of public service. But those who truly understood that journey knew it was never his alone. Ann was the steady presence beside him every step of the way.
During the years when Ron stood as the sole Liberal voice in the Legislative Assembly, I would often remind people that there were in fact two strong representatives carrying the banner — Ron and Ann. While Ron spoke on the floor of the Legislature, Ann offered her unwavering strength, encouragement, and counsel behind the scenes. She was constant, calm, and deeply dedicated.
Ann had a quiet kindness about her. She made a point of building genuine relationships with everyone she met, whether it was their first conversation or one of many. Above all else, she was immensely proud of her family. Being a mother and grandmother brought her tremendous joy. The same joy she so freely shared with others.
On behalf of Bonnie, my family, and the entire Liberal family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Ron, Joanne, Eddie, Jamie, Andrea, Jeff, Elise, and all of Ann’s family and friends.
She will be deeply missed, and fondly remembered.
