Kathleen Casey was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. She became an Islander by choice in 1986 when she was hired by the Community of West Royalty to be their Recreation Director and in 1995 became the Superintendent of Parks for the City of Charlottetown.
In 1997, Kathleen Casey was elected to Charlottetown City Council and then re-elected in 2000, where she served until 2003. She was the Chairperson of Planning, Heritage and Inspection Services Committee and the Parks and Recreation Committee. As a member of Council, Kathleen Casey also served on the Police, Fire, Human Resources and Utility Committees.
Kathleen Casey has been active in her community and has a strong record of public service. She is the past Chair of the United Way of P.E.I. Campaign. In 2004, she was appointed by the Right Honourable Paul Martin to the Prime Minister’s External Advisory Committee on Cities and Communities. Kathleen has also served on the Board of Directors of the Confederation Centre of the Arts, and the Four Neighbourhoods Community Health Centre. She is a volunteer with the Canadian Diabetes Association and Holy Redeemer Parish.
Kathleen was first elected as a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for Charlottetown-Lewis Point in the provincial election held on May 28, 2007, and elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on July 6, 2007. She was re-elected by the people of Charlottetown – Lewis Point in the provincial election held on October 3, 2011, and most recently on May 4, 2015. Kathleen has been a member of the standing committees on Agriculture, Environment, Energy and Forestry; Education and Innovation; and was the chair of the Standing Committee on Privileges, Rules and Private Bills. Currently, Kathleen is a member of the Standing Committee on Communities, Land and Environment, the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Development, the Standing Committee on Health and Wellness, and the Standing Committee on Rules, Regulations, Private Bills and Privileges. Kathleen also currently serves as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Kathleen was the President of the Prince Edward Island Branch of the Canadian Parliamentary Association. She has been a Canadian regional representative to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, and Past Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Executive Committee.
When not serving in an elected or volunteer role, Kathleen Casey laces on her skates and takes to the ice as a member of the Charlottetown Hockey Mommas. This is a group of mothers who raise money for Breast Cancer initiatives on Prince Edward Island.
Kathleen Casey lives in Charlottetown with her husband, Sean and sons, Ryan and Dean.
